(Struny podzimu 2011 - Avishai Cohen)

Type: jazz / blues / swing
Avishai Cohen is notable not only for his rare talent, but equally for his tremendous gift for performing: his energy-filled concerts frequently generate an electric atmosphere, leaving audiences on a musical and emotional high. But it’s not just audiences who love Cohen: critics, too, have been quick to praise him, with prestigious jazz magazine Downbeat proclaiming him a ‘jazz visionary of global proportions.’

Born in Tel Aviv, Cohen left Israel after completing his military service and headed for New York, where he was spotted by Chick Corea, who offered the young bassist a record deal and a place in his new Origin sextet. Before long, Cohen found himself in great demand - collaborating with the likes of Bobby McFerrin and Herbie Hancock – and it wasn’t long before he had established himself as a solo artist in his own right, positioning himself at the vanguard of jazz alongside other young ‘new wave’ players who were changing traditional perceptions of the genre.
Cohen is also a respected composer, with many of his own pieces featuring on his solo albums. The latest of these albums, Seven Seas, will form the bedrock of his Strings of Autumn appearance. Seven Seas is Cohen’s twelfth album, and his second for the Blue Note label. The Strings audience will hear a mix of his own compositions, interpretations of others’ pieces, and updates of traditional Jewish folk songs. And Cohen’s contribution will not be limited to the bass: expect his powerful, unaffected singing voice to add another layer of raw emotion to the mix.
