South Bohemia and Architecture
South Bohemia is presented as unique for its monuments on the UNESCO world heritage list – including Český Krumlov with its chateau including a Baroque theatre and a natural amphitheatre, and a jewel of South Bohemian Peasant Baroque, Holašovice. Our ancestors left us many treasures of art and architecture, such as the castles (Rožmberk, Nové Hrady), the chateaus (Český Krumlov, Třeboň, Červená Lhota), keeps (Žumberk, Cuknštejn), ruins (Dívčí Kámen, Helfenburg), South Bohemian Peasant Baroque (Blata, Holašovice), Cistercian cloisters in Vyšší Brod and Zlatá Koruna, as well as the historical town centres of České Budějovice, Český Krumlov, Třeboň, Jindřichův Hradec, Hussite Tábor or Písek.
Cycling in South Bohemia
The region of South Bohemia is ideal for cycling holidays and the varied countryside provides a wide range of opportunities for outings by bike. The flat landscape around the lakes and ponds of the Třeboň and České Budějovice basin is suitable for recreational cycling away from the dangers of the open road. There is a good network of special hiking and cycling paths through the forests and fields of the region.
In the last five years, marked cycling routes of varying lengths have been laid throughout the territory of South Bohemia. Just as with the hiking routes, detailed maps of these cycling routes have also been published. The paths lead by many artificial lakes, which enable cyclists to have a rest and a swim to refresh themselves. Leading across the eastern half of South Bohemia is the long distance Vienna-Prague cycling route. It passes through the towns of Slavonice, Nová Bystřice, Jindřichův Hradec and Tábor. It is possible to turn off the main route and follow local marked routes designed to acquaint people with the beauty of the South Bohemian landscape. There are also a number of nature trails where visitors can learn about the flora and fauna of individual localities.
