Prague – the City of Many Attributes

Czechtourism: Prague - Charles Bridge

Prague, one of the most exceptional cities in the world, the capital of the Czech Republic on the Moldau river, is often described using a number of attributes, each one characterising the city in its own unique way. Prague always played an important role in the history of our nation, our country and Europe. It has the reputation of being one of the most beautiful cities in the world and has been paid tribute by many a famous personage. Prague is spoken of as the Mother of Cities, which comes from a description by chronicler the Cosmas, who labelled it "the Lady of all Bohemia". It used to be called the head of the kingdom and this motto was inscribed on the Old Town Hall in 1518, it has also been called the city of stone, golden Prague, magic Prague, or the hundred-spired city (today, about 500 spires and towers can be counted in Prague). Like the entire country, Prague is called the Heart of Europe – the city is situated in its very centre and equidistant to the Baltic, North and Adriatic Seas. If Rome was built on seven hills, then Prague was built on nine: Letná, Vítkov, Opyš, Větrov, Skalka, Emauzy, Vyšehrad, Karlov and the highest Petřín, by which the city earned its name the "Rome of the North."

The historic centre of the capital, consisting of four medieval settlement units the Old Town, New Town, Lesser Town and Hradčany, is the largest historical town reserve in the CR and brims with national cultural monuments. By right it has been included in the UNESCO world cultural heritage list.

Besides the fact that Prague is the residence of the President and central government of the Czech Republic, it is also the seat of many international organizations and representative offices, and an important centre of science, culture and education. Is there anybody who does not know Charles University, founded by the remarkable Czech King and Emperor Charles IV in 1348? Under his reign, Prague was in full bloom and many cultural and religious monuments were built. During the more than 1,100 years of its existence, the city has undergone intricate development, which is evidenced by thousands of listed buildings from all styles and periods. You will find buildings in the Romanesque style, as well as of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo, Art Nouveau or Cubist styles here.

When touring Prague, you shouldn't miss , the most prominent feature of the city, which is a textbook of architecture, the burial place of Czech Princes and Kings and the seat of the Office of the President of the Republic. Another remarkable monument is the ancient Charles Bridge, named after its founder, the already mentioned Charles IV. Visitors will be engrossed with the Old Town Square, a silent witness to many events of paramount significance for the Czech Kingdom with a unique astronomic clock situated in its centre; The National Theatre on the embankment of the Moldau river, a symbol of peculiar Czech national culture; and the former Jewish Town, today the Josefov district with a number of synagogues and one of the oldest and most beautiful Jewish cemeteries in the world.
To tour the historic monuments of Prague, you can follow any of the circular tourist trails.

But not all the treasures of Prague are hidden in its centre. Plenty of monuments and tourist destinations can be found in the remaining districts as well. They include among others the zoological garden in Troja, near the charming Troja Manor or the botanical gardens. Břevnov can pride itself on the oldest Monastery in Bohemia, which was built into its present appearance based on designs by father and son Dienzenhofer. Divoká Šárka, on the other hand, is the realm of wild romance, and an important archaeological site. It would be unwise not to visit the time-honoured to pay homage to the memory of the great personages buried in its cemetery. This place also provides one of the most magnificent vistas of Prague. Other great panoramas can be seen from the tower of the Old Town Hall, Powder Tower, Old Town and Lesser Town bridge towers, the steeple of the Cathedral of St. Vitus, Prague Castle, Petřín Lookout, which is a miniature of the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the bell tower of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas, or the television transmitter on Žižkov hill.

Prague is one of the nine cities awarded the title "European City of Culture for the year 2000" by the European Union. For centuries, famous personages came to pay homage to Prague. Let's mention only the great composers W. A. Mozart or L. van Beethoven, British Queen Elizabeth II, or Pope John Paul II.

When walking through Prague, take the opportunity to stop in any of Prague's cafés, where you can sit down, relax and enjoy a cup of good coffee.

Prague has a living tradition of cultural events. The Rudolfinum, as the seat of Czech Philharmonic, and the Art Nouveau Municipal House, as home of the Symphonic Orchestra of the City of Prague FOK, are venues of many regular cultural events. However, these edifices are not the only places of unforgettable atmosphere, which also include various Prague churches and halls. Undoubtedly important cultural events are the traditional Prague Spring festival and the more recent Prague Autumn festival.
