Letovice - chateau

According to archoeological findings, the original castle was built in the 2nd half of the 13th century during the reign of the Lords of Letovic, the first written mention dates back to 1360. The castle had its very own brewery (in operation until 1929), beer was brewed from hops, grown on the slopes below the castle until 1830, a coopery and still-room. At the beginning of the 15th century, in 1424 the castle was destroyed by the Husites. However, the Letovic castle was already reconstructed in the second half of the 15th century. In 1643, the castle was seized by the Swedes. At the end of the 17th century the centre of the residence was reconstructed into an Early Baroque chateau. In 1724, the chateau was burned to the ground with the town. Following the fire, reconstruction continued and in 1820 the chateau received its present day Empire and pseudo-gothic look. In 1881 -1885 the chateau slope was reconstructed into an extensive English style park. After 1945, the chateau became the property of the town national committee and began to waste away. Following 1989, the chateau was returned in restitutional proceedings to the Count Alexander Kalnoky. Static security ensued and sanitation of the riging hall vaults took place and now it is being reconstructed in the care of Bohumil Vavřík.
