The town was founded at the beginning of the 16th century above the Metuje River valley. The dominant features of the town are visible from a distance – the Renaissance chateau, its tower Máselnice, and the Gothic Church of the Holy Trinity. The civic houses surrounding the picturesque town square have a unified Renaissance appearance with typical gables known as “swallow tails,” public rooms, and arcades.
