Description:	Brother of the writer Heinrich Mann, German prosaic and essayist, Novel Prize winner for literature (1929). His debut was the novel Gefallen. His first great work, the novel Buddenbrook was published in 1901. The book reaped rave reviews and Thomas became a famous German writer almost overnight. In 1938 he went to the U.S.A. (he became a citizen in 1944). Following World War II he returned to Europe.
