North Moravia and Silesia
How much time would you need to get to know this interesting part of our country? You could travel this region of mountains and picturesque valleys and admire unique historical buildings, unexpected natural formations, magical scenery in any season, the variety of living folk traditions and crafts for years. You would need a lot of strength and vigour to enjoy all the sporting attractions and taste all the delicacies and beverages, offered by the inns and kitchens of this unique region.
Local towns, villages and hamlets offer convenient background for recreation. Rich history, evidenced by numerous monuments, not a few famous personages of science, the arts, and sports, magnificent musical festivals and theatre performances, hundreds of kilometres of marked foot and bike trails, beautiful mountain ranges – that is North Moravia and Silesia.
The region is rich in virgin nature and invites thousands of visitors to hunt and fish every year. You will find there hundreds of kilometres of trout streams, numerous water reservoirs, pheasantries and hunting grounds where you can enjoy splendid hunt feasts.
The castles, chateaus and manors of Moravia and Silesia have a glorious past and pride themselves on their inimitable architecture. Most of them are surrounded by well-preserved manor parks or gardens with exotic trees and hold various events.
The region is full of religious monuments. Religion, as one of the most powerful driving forces of human existence, gave rise to hundreds of churches, chapels, convents, monasteries and pilgrimage places. Only a few people know of the unique collection (largest in the Czech Republic) of old wooden churches and other timbered buildings, so typical of the Beskids and the surrounding region. They are situated in Hrčava, Nýdek, Bystřice, Guty, Dolní Marklovice, Albrechtice, Sedliště, Řepiště, on the hills Bílá, Grúň, Prašivá, Čeladná, in Hoslavice and in other places.
Technical Sights and Crafts
Ancient crafts have a long-time tradition in the region of North Moravia and Silesia.
They also gave rise to many museums, where you can literally inhale history and acquire interesting knowledge. Those best known and unique in the European context include: the Mining Museum in Ostrava – Petřkovice, bunkers and fortresses on the border (the best-known is the fortification system Hlučín – Darkovičky), the Technical Museum of the History of Tatra Car Making in Kopřivnice, the Railway Car Museum in Studénka, preserved water and wind mills, the Town Museum in Budišov nad Budišovkou with an exhibition of clay slate mining and processing, the bell foundry in Halenkov, the Karolinka Glassworks, the Museum of Gold and Ore Mining in Zlaté Hory, and the unique processing plant and museum of handmade paper in Velké Losiny.
The prominent features of North Moravia and Silesia are the mountain ranges of Jeseníky and the Beskids, where are the highest peaks of Moravia - both Praděd and Lysá hora are legendary hills of folklore.
The region can pride itself on the highest concentration of protected natural areas and natural parks in our country. There are several dozens of them. They consist of deep woods, rocks, unusual natural formations, peat bogs and rare marshes. Both Jeseníky and the Beskids stand out for their crystal clear mountain air and preserved, often virgin nature.
The most recently established protected natural area of the Czech Republic is the Oder Basin:
It was established in 1991 and covers both banks of the river Oder. An attractive nature trail Silver Path passes through the area.
Local botanical gardens provide enough material for a separate chapter, and include real jewels, such as Arboretum Nový Dvůr near Opava – the botanical gardens with rare plants of five continents well-known all over Europe.
Other remarkable places include the picturesque natural parks Moravice, Oderské vrchy, Sovinecko and
Rešov Waterfalls, which rank among the most beautiful in the Czech Republic.
Mountains and foothills make splendid scenery, inviting to impressing climbs and hiking tours across the wooded slopes and ranges of the Beskids. The hills ofJeseníky offer a number of foot trails passing through the picturesque country. They will tempt you to walk through the valleys of the rivers Moravice, Oder or Budišovka, or romantic surroundings of the water reservoir Slezská Harta.
Cycling The region is crisscrossed by a dense network of cycling trails with total length of more than 1,500 km. There are also several long-distance cycling trails passing through the region: Amber Trail, Silesian Artery, Beskids-Carpathian Artery, the route Jihlava – Český Těšín and remarkable international circuits through Polish border zone, Euroregion Těšín Silesia. Other attractive cycling trails can be found around Frýdek-Místek, in the Oder Basin and in Nízký Jeseník. The Beskids and Hrubý Jeseník are areas suitable for more experienced bikers.
Winter Sports The ranges of Jeseníky and the Beskids with their mountain resorts, cosy hotels and chalets, and areas for downhill and cross-country skiing, snowboarding and sledging make a perfect tourist destination. Jeseníky are covered with snow from November to May. Well-known skiing resorts in the Beskids , including Ovčárna pod Pradědem, Malá Morávka, and Pustevny, Bílá, Grúň, Zlatník and many others, are favoured by many skiers. Excellent cross-country grounds can be found even in the foothills.
Agritourism can be pursued in many local settlements. You can enjoy horseback riding, game hunting and fishing and take pleasure in hospitable housing in picturesque scenery.
Golf Golf players can enjoy their favourite sport on 36-hole cource in Čeladná, 18-hole course on the ground of manor park in Šilheřovice or in Kravaře.
Health Resorts and Balneology
Preserved nature and a number of springs of healing mineral waters and iodine-bromine waters of oceanic origins from the times of Tertiary folding gave rise to a series of health resorts in the last century. Stays in the spa resorts can be easily combined with short trips or attractive cultural events. Health resorts, such as Darkov near Karviná, Klimkovice near Ostrava, Karlova Studánka, Lázně Lipová, Priessnitz Sanatorium in Gräfenberg or Velké Losiny Spa rank among the most frequented places of the region.
Gastronomy
Local Moravian dishes will please stomach and mind of any visitor.
The delicious Walachian slivovitz, as well as the beers Radegast and Ostravar are well-known for their unbeatable positive effects on health and good humour.
Enjoy tasty cakes, called Walachian "frgále", "kyselica" soup, kielbasas baked in beer batter and other delicacies.
Rich Traditions, Rich Culture
Cultural riches of the region consist of numerous singing and dancing ensembles, folk festivals, museums and galleries in chateaus or towns, cinemas, permanent thespian ensembles in cities, international puppeteer festival Janáček May, musical festivals Janáček's Hukvaldy and Beethoven's Hradec and more. Walachian open-air museum in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm is a unique national cultural monument of folk architecture, customs and traditions. Most children would be pleased to visit Fairytale Cellar of Ghosts and the zoo in Ostrava or the annual convention of ghosts and witches in Štramberk, to take historical tram or a short trip to the mysteries of deep space in Ostrava planetarium.
