Golf in Bohemia and Moravia
As a sport, golf has had a long and turbulent history in Bohemia. The first golf courses in this region were built in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad Springs) and Mariánswké Lázně (Marienbad) under the auspices of the English king Edward VII in 1903, or more precisely 1905. The courses found success in 1937, when the Czech Golf Federation took a leading role in the foundation of the European Golf Association in Luxembourg. However, the growing eagerness for this sport was stifled by history. The Second World War and forty years of communism in what was then known as Czechoslovakia delivered crushing blows to golf because golf was not considered an Olympic sport behind the Iron Curtain. It thus became a rarity among sports; however its enthusiasts determinedly kept playing it. Golf was re-born in Bohemia no sooner than after the Velvet Revolution in 1989. Nowadays, the Czech Golf Federation has approximately 20,000 registered players and this number is rising by leaps and bounds as other golf courses of a higher quality are being built in an attempt to satisfy the intensive demand.
Our golf courses are of high quality and highly enjoyable
In addition to "traditional" golf courses, such as Karlovy Vary, Karštejn, Mariánské Lázně others, it was possible to build several new, high-quality courses that meet European standards over the course of the past few years. At present, there are about 50 courses operating in the Czech Republic, many of which are of very high quality, some are interesting as far as the game is concerned, and others have an unmistakable character owing to their surroundings and the opportunities that they offer.
